This operation had to be conducted to get Saddam Hussein to end his occupation of Kuwait. His armies overran the small country claiming that it belonged to Iraq but I believe that the real reason for the move was that he wanted to control the majority of the worlds oil reserves.
His troops sat poised on the border of Saudi Arabia before the US and her allies could scramble to cut them off.
The presence of the Iraqi Army on the Border of Saudi Arabia alarmed the Saudis and they responded by allowing US troops to come in and occupy their country in order to protect them from an Iraqi incursion.
Kuwait was liberated in Februrary of 1990 by a force of US and coalition troops. Iraqi forces attempted to escape on the major highway that led north into Iraq but were cut off by US Air Power and the 24th Infantry Division (which I was a member of) which had encircled the Iraqis and cut them off from the North.
The result of the Iraqis running into this encircling force was disastrous for them. The highway leading out of Kuwait became known as the highway of death because of the great number of escaping Iraqi troops who were killed using it to head back towards Baghdad.
