Who is Ronald Lee Ermey?

   Ronald Lee Ermey was born in 1944 and is best known to me by the role that he played as a Marine Drill Instructor in the movie "Full Metal Jacket." I also liked him in "Mississippi Burning." I think that the roles that he was cast in these two movies fit him to a tee. Mr Ermey also host the show known as "Mail Call," where he talks about military equipment and how it is used.

I found recently that the producers gave him the leeway to ad lib when he played the part of the drill Instructor on Full Metal Jacket because he was such a natural for that role.

The results of this was a performance which I doubt can ever be repeated. It showed me the viewer exactly what a Marine recruit has to go through in basic training.

One thing that I didn't know before I read about him to write this post is that Mr Ermey had to enlist in the Marine Corps in order to stay out of jail. I think that this is a great testament to the benefits of the discipline that military service offers.
