For all of you who may not have any affiliation with the military let me describe electronic warfare. To describe it in a nutshell it consists of all measures taken before and during the battle to confuse or mix the enemy up.
I have had jamming used against me when in the field and it is not fun at all. When you can't communicate you cannot relay orders to your troops in the field. This makes it next to impossible to adjust to the ongoing battle and to destroy the enemy. It is probably the most frustrating thing that can happen to a combat leader.
Some types of electronic warfare are jamming his radio or radar so that he can't communicate or find our aircraft. ECW aircraft are usually the first to go into the battle. They use electronic warfare to open up lanes of attack and escape for the fighter and bomber aircraft. They are not trying to destroy all of the radar. If they can open up a path of ingress and egress they have done their job.

The prowler is also used to gather intelligence of enemy air operations. Now don't ask me how it does this because I don't have a clue. It has a 4 man crew which consists of the pilot and 3 ECW officers. It can be equipped with AGM-88 HARM anti radar missiles, and the A2Q-99 Tactical Jamming System. Non of my Navy military ring customers have been EA-6B crewmen so far but I am looking forward to the first one.
