Has Piracy in the Gulf of Oman been Wiped Out?

Piracy in the Gulf of Oman seems to be on the decline according to statistics. The drop in part can be attributed to our Navy because of the efforts that they have put forth.

There was an international effort to stamp out piracy in the gulf but as usual with any international military effort the United States usually gets to do most of the work.

The small skiffs that the pirates use along with their small arms is no match for the large ships and fire power that NATO ships use. Pirates have had to scatter out and attempt to ply their trade over a larger area but that tactic doesn't seem to be working at all.

Many times the pirates would be busted, have their weapons confiscated and forced to return to Somalia. There were very few times that they were actually prosecuted because of the international red tape involved.

France is now in command of Task Force 465, European Naval forces  fighting piracy off the coasts of Somalia. In addition to France, EU  nations like Germany, Italy, Luxemburg, Portugal, Spain and the  Netherlands have deployed ships and aircraft.

Currently, pirates are holding seven vessels and 213 people as hostage. This also demonstrates the success of the anti piracy campaign. www.militaryringexpress.com
