When we join the military we sign up knowing that one day we might have to fight and quite possibly die in combat. It isn't what anybody thinks it is but the situation has to be dealt with. In this case the troop wasn't a combat troop. She just decided that she didn't like being in Iraq. Quite honestly I don't think there are three people in the entire US Military who did. We all wanted to leave.
I am a combat vet and I have been scared many times so badly that I couldn't hardly function. I wanted very badly to leave but I had sworn an oath and my word meant just that much to me. Now if the military had allowed me to leave I would have done so in a heartbeat but they didn't so I had to stay and deal with a situation that was just thouroughly rotten..
Thirty-year-old Kimberly Rivera, an Army private and mother of four fled to Canada to escape returning to Iraq in 2007. She had already served three months in Iraq which is enough time for anyone to figure out that they don't want any more of that.
She opposed the war and moved to Canada to escape her obligation. She was a mother of four so I can feel her pain but I am sure that there were many other mothers of four who had to just remain in iraq according to their obligation. As a matter of fact I can bet you that there were households where both parents had to deploy and leave their children in the care of friends or family members.
She applied for refugee status in Canada but was refused. Quite frankly the Army probably won't give her any jail time because they have so many other things that are a greater priority. Many deserters are simply discharged (not Honorably) and forgotten about. I don't think that this case will be much different.
This is a reminder for those who need to join the Army to get another paycheck. All of our military ring customers know that sometimes the Army can be easy duty during peacetime but an Army at war is a different story.
