Japan and the U.S. are considering plans to use Guam as a hub for spy drones to monitor Chinese naval activities in the Pacific, according to a report in the Japan Times. Many Asian countries are getting just a little bit panicky because of increasing Chinese aggression as well they should.
The Chinese need all of the resources that they can muster in order to support their growing population. The only way for them to get these resources is to grow and gobble up the territory that is rich in natural resources in that area. The problem is that there are others who claim it also.
The U.S. already has Global Hawks stationed at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam. The U.S. Air Force plans to expand the number of spy drones at Andersen and welcome Japan drones over the next decade as the Japanese military plans to buy its own drone fleet.
The Japanese need to be able to keep an eye on the Chinese Navy as it operates in the pacific and drones are a better option because they add some flexibility to what the Japanese can already do with the surveillance aircraft that they use. They need to keep an eye on the Chinese because their aggression is of concern to the nations located in that region.
The Japanese don’t have a large military force. They only maintain a small military for their own self defense. If the Chinese decided to make an move against them they would be almost helpless. They would need the assistance of strong allies in order to protect their own territory.
The US will benefit from this move because it will give them eyes in the sky in the region above what they already have. We need to keep a close eye on the Chinese also because many of our allies would require our military help or presence in time of trouble.
The Chinese are not afraid of us so any US presence would probably have to be backed by military action.
They have sought to purchase drones for their own use but so far tha sale hasn’t quite matriculated. If the event of Chinese aggression against Japan our Navy Ring Customers would have to be pressed into action very quickly.
