The Afghan Air Force has craft that are antiquated and not really reliable at all. They are a non factor when it comes to fending off the Taliban.
The high tech high speed US and NATO aircraft which have been used in the war have been instrumental in keeping the Taliban at bay and even driving them out of many areas that they had actually controlled.
I believe that the drone was the single best technological breakthrough of this period. Even though drones had been around for many years before this conflict they were used in new and innovative ways to accomplish the mission of destroying the Taliban and al-Qaeda.
The US will have to leave a fairly large Air Force contingent there for quite a while, and perhaps indefinitely because the Taliban and al-Qaeda will always have to be suppressed.
I personally think that we should sell them some aircraft but we should maintain control of our most sophisticated surveillance, fighter, and bomber aircraft.
I personally don't have the confidence in the Afghan Security Forces to give them any control of our most high tech aircraft. The US will almost surely have to leave a contingent of our custom Air Force ring customers there to ensure that they operation continues to run smoothly.
